Nikholai - Week 4

A short post for this week. Due to some bumps in the road as it could be said with my dissertation I had to spend additional time working on that. Additionally, I recently started working as a student ambassador and therefore had to help out at an open day for the university. A fun and rather educational experience it was alas a lost day of work. Furthermore I had to assist at a friend’s music event over the weekend. So though the week has been a varied one with a lot of opportunities to learn new skills it was sadly, not as productive for Game 15 as it could of been.

I have however been able to confirm what animations will be needed for the prototype. After discussing with the group it is clear what direction Game 15 is heading in and it is a grand display of passion and excitement. As for the animations however, the list contains the expected walk, run, jog and idles. However the complete list contains a few animations that will require a range of different variations on the core action. For example, we are aiming to have the player react to ledges in different ways depending on height. He might ‘step up’, ‘hop up’, ‘jump up’ or even take a running leap over the object in his way. More challenging animations will include zip lines, a range of throwing animations, climbing animations for the player controlled climbing system and many more. I am however happy to be able to plan a range of death animations. Furthermore, with the addition of the bosses later one I will be able to create further context sensitive animations.

Heading into the next week I’ve got some very clear goals laid out that I’m set on meeting. These include working on the character rig and aiming to finish, at the very least, the lower body section. This includes the feet and legs. From an education point of view I’m also keen to take on sufficient notes during this process and aim to have a clear understand of how these components of the rig are created and work. Onwards and upwards.
