This is how it works:
You set a maximum distance, this distance is where the bridge will start floating. If you are further than this distance the bridge will not float.
When you are within the distance, the bridge will start to float. It is cut up into sections, each one floating individually. The height of each piece is chosen at random, however, the closer you are, the higher they can potentially go. The amount of time for each piece to float is also chosen at random. They also float back down.
When you get really close to the bridge, all the pieces rise to a set height.
The bridge pieces are then swapped out for a broken equivalent. To do this I simply installed a plugin for Maya that shatters meshes. These pieces then expand, each piece has a distance randomly set.
Then, all the pieces contract whilst shrinking into one point.
Then explosion.
